Paying for College: Your Financing Options

By: Mevish Jaffer

Whether you’re coming out of high school or heading back to college as an adult, the challenging task of financing your education is probably something you’re facing. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can obtain the funding necessary to pay for your college tuition and other related expenses. For example, you can apply for financial aid in order to be eligible for student loans and grants. You can also search for various scholarships online as another way to acquire funding for college.

Financial Aid: Government Funding

Every year, billions of dollars are allocated or lent to students in the form of financial aid. Generally, financial aid is awarded to students based on financial need, college expenses and the amount of funds available. You can take advantage of this type of aid if you lack the financial resources needed for your college education, and if your family is also unable to assist.

As for specific eligibility requirements; in order to qualify for financial aid, you must satisfy the following restrictions:

  • You need to be a United States citizen or an eligible non-citizen
  • You need to be either enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited school or university
  • You need to excel in the field of your study with a satisfactory grade point average
  • You need to be in good standing with any other loans taken out in other academic institutions

Student Grants

Another way the government can assist you is through student grants, which can also be obtained through your school. Grant money, such as that obtained through the Federal Pell Grant, can help pay for your college education and does not need to be repaid (unlike loans), when you graduate. Remember that grants are typically awarded to those students who demonstrate need on their FAFSA. If you feel you would qualify, it would be in your best interest to apply for them.

Search for Scholarships

Similar to student grants, scholarships are also tax-free and never have to be re-paid, which makes them a great resource to hit up for financing your college tuition! That in mind however, you also have to know that while scholarships are a great source, they can often be challenging to obtain.

If you’re coming in right out of high school, you can probably speak to your teachers and counselors about different scholarships they may know of. You can also search online, as there are literally thousands of scholarships you can find for just about every type of situation. Don’t forget that you can also look to local businesses, non-profit organizations as well as the U.S. Government for various scholarships they may be offering to college-bound students.

College Loans

When students are not able to attain scholarships or if they do not meet eligibility requirements needed for grants, they often turn to student loans as a means of financial assistance. Certain loans, such as the Perkins, Stafford and federal PLUS can all help in paying your way through school. However, it’s important for you to keep in mind that loans are very different from grants and scholarships. Depending on which types of loans you choose, you will most likely have to begin repayment after a certain time period (in most cases, 6-9 months) once you have graduated.

Financing your education can be a difficult task; however you can make it a lot easier on yourself if you do your research ahead of time. Through financial aid, student grants, loans and scholarships, you can ensure your college education and a promising future upon graduation.
